A letter to the BIWOC* community

Dear, BIWOC*s,

it has been quit here from our side, because Covid-19 measures had a bigger impact on us that we initially thought.

Our work is community based and we were not allowed to meet. And to be honest, a zoom meeting is not going to replace that.

We love that digitization gives us the ability to connect with people all over the world, but not to the extend, that we have to chat online with out neighbors and families.

Also, raising money for our safe(r) space is now even harder than before and we are still under restrictions to offer a work space the way we need it.

Last but not least, the injustice, racism, sexism and all -isms that got worse around the world had a big impact on our psyche. On one hand we feel helpless to see people dying, because they hunger (to save the rich), because of racist systems that put minorities at a disadvantage in their health, because governments use this time to strengthen their authoritarian power structures, because of privileged people hitting each other on the shoulder for going shopping for the elderly and granting asylum for 50 kids out of thousands of refugees and so on.

On the other hand all the above and more give us more reasons to continue our work and do more to break this pattern for the next generations.

As soon as we can gather together in bigger groups we would like to meet you and discuss what has changed, what we should do different in the future for our space. We don’t want to go back to the way it was before, but we know that will need a lot of energy.

We hope to meet soon and get this space started.

Your BIWOC* Rising team

INTERSECTIONAL WORK & SOCIAL CLUB

BIWOC* Rising is the first intersectional co-working space & social club in Berlin and Germany. This safer space is exclusively for women, trans, inter and non-binary people who identify as Black, indigenous or of Colour! Through training programs, empowerment workshops, and a work-desk in the heart of Berlin-Kreuzberg, BIWOC* Rising is creating a new working culture – a working culture that transcends the white, homogenous, capitalist one that has been a core driver of gentrification and marginalization in Berlin.
